From the Sioux and Winnebago Indians and pioneer settlers to the famous speakers on the Chautauqua national circuit, Clear Lake, Iowa has a colorful history.  Knowledge of the past encourages responsible citizenship, a deeper understanding of current events and an inspiration for creating the next chapters of history.

The Clear Lake Historical Society mission is to collect, preserve, protect and provide information from early area history to the present, on the natural and human environment of our corner of the universe.

Clear Lake Historical Society Annual Meeting  

 

The Clear Lake Historical Society held their annual meeting on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Clear Lake Public Library. No new board members were elected at this meeting.
    
Jerry O’Neill, seen in the photo above with Historical Society Board member Judy Lincicum, continues to provide historical presentations in the area with his portrayal of an early settler, Lon Greene.  The presentation at this year's annual meeting was given by H. Milton Duesenberg, and highlighted the life of Clear Lake's "Music Man', John Kopecky. This was the introduction to an update for those present on the completion of the Historical Society's project to erect memorial waysides at the 1919 bandstand/gazebo in City Park, honoring Mr. Kopecky. “Several items have been completed to help contect with the community. ”A new information and membership brochure was created this past year and has been distributed.
    
The Historical Society has also updated its email and website and is now on Facebook.  The Historical Society also has started a quarterly community presentation series; the first one held in June of 2016.
    
The Clear Lake Historical Society continues the process of updating the second walking tour brochure and also a “Trolley” or driving tour brochure.  Watch for more information here as the CLHS continues to find ways to help you Catch the Wave of Clear Lake history.

The officers elected at the August 20, 2016, Board of Directors Meeting were as follows: Beth Ann Schumacher, President; Bennett Smith, Vice President; Marcia Grabinski, Treasurer; and Judy Lincicum, Secretary.  Current Board members are:  H. Milton Duesenberg, Donna Dull, Beverly Elder, Bennett Smith, Doug Grabinski, Marcia Grabinski, Sherry Bitker, Tom Joslyn, Tamara Orte, Norma Stephesen, Judy Lincicum, Jerry O'Neill, and Beth Ann Schumacher.

 

It’s a great time to join or renew your membership in the Clear Lake Historical Society!

Exciting projects are in the works!   The Historical Society is currently working with Clear Lake High School's American Heritage students in preparing a Clear Lake Cemetery Walk.   Our exhibits at Dana’s Decorating Studio in downtown Clear Lake continue to be updated.  The restoration of historic buildings and collection of many artifacts and documents continues as well.
